General Construction Specifications

   PART 1 - GENERAL

    01 SECTION INCLUDES

    A. Medium voltage interrupter switches.

    02 REFERENCES

    A. ANSI/IEEE 24 - Performance Characteristics and Dimensions for Outdoor Apparatus Bushings.

    B. ANSI/IEEE 37.20 - Switchgear Assemblies, Including Metal-Enclosed Bus.

    C. IEEE 48 - Test Procedures and Requirements for High-Voltage AC Cable Terminations.

    D. ANSI Z55.1 - Gray Finishes for Industrial Apparatus and Equipment.

    1.02 SUBMITTALS

    A. Submit shop drawings under the provisions of applicable Sections of Division 1.

    B. Submit shop drawings indicating outline dimensions, enclosure construction, shipping splits, lifting and supporting points, electrical single line diagram, and electrical ratings.

    C. Submit product data under the provisions of applicable Sections of Division 1.

    D. Submit product data for components and accessories.

    1.03 OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE DATA

    A. Submit operation and maintenance data under provisions of applicable Sections of Division 1.

    B. Include fuse replacement, adjustment, and lubrication instructions.

    1.04 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

    A. Deliver, store, and protect products to site under provisions of applicable Sections of Division 1.

    B. Accept interrupter switches on site and inspect for damage.

    C. Protect interrupter switches from weather and moisture by covering with heavy plastic or canvas and by maintaining heat within enclosure in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

    1.05 EXTRA MATERIALS

    A. Submit maintenance materials under provisions of applicable Sections of Division 1.

    B. Submit two insulated-handle tools designed for pulling fuses.

    C. Provide two sets of spare fuses of each size and rating under provisions of applicable Sections of Division 1.

   PART 2 - PRODUCTS

    2.02 AIR INTERRUPTER SWITCHES

    A. Switches: ANSI/IEEE 37.20; switchgear assembly including individual air interrupter switches in free-standing cubicles.

    B. System Voltage: 13.8 kV, three phase, 60 Hz.

    C. Maximum Design Voltage: 15 kV.

    D. Basic Impulse Level: 95 kV.

    E. Main Bus Ampacity: 600 amperes, continuous.

    F. Short Circuit Rating: 40,000 rms symmetrical amperes at rated nominal voltage.

    2.03 COMPONENTS

    A. Interrupter Switch: Fused two position load interrupter switch.

    B. Voltage and Short Circuit Ratings: Match ratings specified for integrated assembly.

    C. Momentary Rating: 40,000 amperes.

    D. Fault Closing: 40,000amperes, two time duty cycle.

    2.04 ACCESSORIES

    A. Incoming Cable Terminations: Clamp-type, with adequate space for stress-cone terminations.

    B. Provide permanently mounted operating handle, lockable in both positions. Interlock fuse compartment door to prevent opening with switch in CLOSED position.

    C. Surge Arrestors: Intermediate class, rated 7.2 kV; mount in incoming line compartment.

    D. Space Heaters: For 120 V external source, sized by switchgear manufacturer.

    2.05 FABRICATION

    A. Construction: Weatherproof.

    B. Main Bus: Aluminum.

    C. Height: 100 inches, maximum including auxiliary support members on top and bottom.

    D. Provide separate access to fuses through main cabinet door.

    E. Include continuous ground bus through switchgear assembly, securely connected to frame of each cubicle.

    F. Make top and rear covers removable.

    G. Provide lugs for incoming feeder in switch cubicle.

    H. Provide sloped drip-proof roof.

    2.06 FACTORY FINISHING

    A. Clean surfaces before applying paint.

    B. Apply corrosion-resisting primer to all surfaces.

    C. Apply finish coat of manufacturer's standard baked enamel.

    2.07 MANUFACTURERS - MEDIUM VOLTAGE FUSES

    A. General Electric - Type EJ

    B. S&C - Type SM

    C. Westinghouse - Type CLE

    2.08 MEDIUM VOLTAGE FUSES

    A. Fuse: Enclosed current limiting, non-expulsion type suitable for use outdoors in enclosure.

    B. Fuse Rating: E rated fuse, size as indicated.

    C. Voltage: 15 kV.

    D. Interrupting Rating: 50 KA amperes rms symmetrical.

   PART 3 - EXECUTION

    04 EXAMINATION

    A. Verify that surfaces are ready to receive work.

    B. Verify field measurements are as shown on shop drawings.

    C. Verify that required utilities are available, in proper location, and ready for use.

    D. Beginning of installation means installer accepts existing surface conditions.

    05 INSTALLATION

    A. Install in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

    06 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

    A. Field inspection and testing will be performed under provisions of applicable Sections of Division 1.

    B. Visually inspect for physical damage.

    C. Perform mechanical operator tests in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Check blade alignment and arc interrupter operations.

    D. Perform insulation resistance test on each phase to ground and from each phase to each other phase. Record results.

    E. Perform AC or DC overpotential test to ANSI/IEEE 37.20.

    F. Perform contact resistance test across each switch blade; report any contact resistance in excess of 50 microohms.

    G. Verify key interlock operation.
