General Construction Specifications

   PART 1 - GENERAL

    01 WORK INCLUDED

    A. Furnish and install pipe hangers and associated as follows.

    1. Cast iron pipe clevis hangers.

    2. Copper clad copper pipe hangers.

    3. Clevis hangers.

    4. Riser clamps/cast iron or PVC pipe.

    5. Riser clamps/copper tube.

    6. Galvanized strut trapeze hangers.

    7. Beam clamps.

    8. Galvanized sheet metal saddles.

    9. Galvanized continuous threaded hanger rod.

    10. Galvanized nuts and washers.

    11. Miscellaneous metals.

    12. Other associated hanger materials or equipment.

    1.02 QUALITY ASSURANCE

    A. Refer to Specifications Section 15308: Plumbing General Provisions.

    B. Materials and installation shall meet with federal, state and local code requirements including any agencies having jurisdiction.

    1.03 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

    A. Deliver products to site under provisions of specifications and refer to Section 15308: Plumbing General Provisions.

    B. Store and protect products under provisions of other sections of the specifications. Protect from weather.

    1.04 SUBMITTALS

    A. Refer to Specifications Section 15308: Plumbing General Provisions for specified requirements.

    1.05 NON-SPECIFIED/LISTED PRODUCT OR MATERIAL SUBSTITUTIONS

    A. Refer to Specifications Section 15308: Plumbing General Provisions, and Section 15309: Plumbing Product or Material Substitution Request Form.

    B. If a manufacturer or Contractor wishes a non-specified/listed product or material to be considered and listed as an equivalent product or material, the above listed specifications sections shall be correctly followed, and submitted, or the proposed substitution shall be denied.

   PART 2 - PRODUCTS

    02 ACCEPTABLE MANUFACTURERS - HANGERS AND SUPPORTS

    A. Grinnell Corporation.

    B. PHD Manufacturing, Inc.

    C. B-Line Systems, Inc.

    2.02 HANGERS AND SUPPORTS

    A. Grinnell Corporation Figure 260 MSS Type 1, with adjustable clevis hangers for:

    1. Non-insulated pipe 2 inch and larger.

    2. Non-insulated cast iron pipe.

    B. Grinnell Corporation Figure 260 adjustable wrought clevis hangers, with Figure 167, MSS Type 40 galvanized insulation protection shields (sized for supporting insulation having a compressive strength of 4 psi, at 8 foot intervals). Support piping on outside of insulation. Size hangers so that pipe insulation passes through them without interruption. Use these for:

    1. Insulated steel pipe 1/2 inch and larger.

    2. Insulated copper pipe 1/2 inch and larger.

    C. Grinnell Corporation Figure CT-99C, MSS Type 9, with adjustable wrought tubing ring hanger, either plastic covered or copper plated for:

    1. Non-insulated copper tubing with no longitudinal movement.

    D. Grinnell Corporation Figure CT-121C, MSS Type 8, riser clamp (at floor penetrations) to support:

    1. Copper pipe risers.

    E. Grinnell Corporation Figure 261, MSS Type 8, riser clamps (at floor slab penetrations) to support:

    1. Steel pipe risers.

    2. Cast iron pipe risers.

    F. Strut Trapeze Hangers: Where three or more lines of pipe run parallel, support them with galvanized strut trapeze hangers.

    G. Concrete Inserts: Grinnell Corporation Figure 288, MSS Type 18, universal concrete inserts, adequately sized and correctly positioned to support full load, operating systems.

    H. C-Clamps: Grinnell Corporation Figure 86, MSS Type 23.

    1. Use these for attaching hangers to steel beams.

    2. Note: Welding hanger rods to steel structural members shall not be permitted.

    I. Malleable Beam Clamps: Grinnell Corporation Figure 229, MSS Type 30: Use these for attaching hangers to bar joists.

   PART 3 - EXECUTION

    03 PIPE HANGERS AND SUPPORTS

    A. Support pipes on specified hangers so that equipment, pumps and fittings do not bear weight of pipe.

    1. Support pipe risers at regular intervals in pipe shafts.

    2. Do not use perforated metal, strap iron, or band iron.

    3. Do not make offsets in hangers.

    B. The table below indicates maximum allowable spacing of hanger and brackets for horizontal piping.

    1. Install hangers and supports to meet or exceed Federal, State and local codes and requirements, authorities having jurisdiction.

    2. Space hangers and brackets at closer intervals where necessary to maintain levels, slopes and drainage, or to prevent sagging.

    MAXIMUM ALLOWABLE SPACING OF HANGERS FOR HORIZONTAL PIPING

    COPPER PIPE

    PIPE DIAMETER SPACING

    1/2" 6'-0" O.C.

    3/4" - 1" 8'-0" O.C.

    1-1/4" - 2" 10'-0" O.C.

    CAST IRON DRAINAGE PIPE

    Support at each fitting, joint, change of direction

    and at intervals of not more than five (5) foot apart.

    B. Pipe shall be suspended from the building structure in a neat and workmanlike manner. Wherever possible, parallel runs of horizontal pipe shall be grouped on trapeze type hangers.

    C. The use of wire or perforated metal is not permitted.

    D. Hanging of pipe from other pipes and duct shall not be permitted.

    E. Provide anchors as required for proper anchorage including channels and plate. Piping shall be anchored to structural components as required to eliminate lateral and longitudinal movement.

    F. Provide anchors as required for proper anchorage including channels and plate.

    G. Piping in mechanical room may be supported from adjustable floor stand, provided that traffic and maintenance are not hindered.

    H. Vertical piping shall be secured at sufficiently close intervals to keep the pipe in alignment and carry the weight of the pipe and contents. Screwed pipe shall be supported at not less than every other story height. Copper tubing shall be supported at each story for piping 3/4 inch and over and at intervals not more than four feet for 1/2 inch and smaller.

    I. Hangers on insulated piping larger than one inch shall pass around insulation. Provide a 12 inch long saddle consisting of rigid insulation at hanger with an 18 gauge galvanized sheet metal saddle. Refer to Specifications Section 15430: Plumbing Piping Insulation for sheet metal saddle requirements.

    J. Furnish and install anchors as required for proper anchorage including channels, plate, and any associated metals.

    04 DETAILS

    A. Refer to Contract Drawings for details.
