General Construction Specifications

   PART 1 - GENERAL

    01 WORK INCLUDED

    A. Work specified under this section includes:

    1. Expansion joints, compensators

    2. Swing joints

    B. Construct expansion compensation products in accordance with Standards of Expansion Joint Manufacturers Association (EJMA).

    02 SUBMITTALS

    A. Submit product data to Architect for approval in accordance with Section 15010.

   PART 2 - PRODUCTS

    03 MANUFACTURERS

    A. Provide packless expansion joints as manufactured by ADSCO, Aeroquip, Hy-Span Precision Products, or Metraflex.

    B. Provide slip joints as manufactured by ADSCO, Advanced Thermal Systems, Hy-Span Precision Products, or Metraflex.

    C. Provide flexible ball pipe joints as manufactured by Advanced Thermal Systems, Aeroquip or Spraying Systems.

    04 PACKLESS EXPANSION JOINTS

    A. Provide packless expansion joints where required or shown on drawings for piping systems with operating temperatures of 400oF or less.

    B. Select packless expansion joints to provide 200% absorption capacity of piping expansion between anchors.

    C. Expansion Compensators: Pressure rated for 60 psi for low pressure systems, 175 psi for high pressure systems; 2 ply phosphor bronze bellows, brass shrouds and end fittings for copper piping systems, or 2 ply stainless steel bellows, carbon steel shrouds and end fittings for steel piping systems. Provide internal guides and anti-torque device, and removable end clip for proper positioning.

    05 SLIP JOINTS

    A. Provide slip joints where indicated for piping systems, with materials and pressure/temperature ratings selected by Installer to suit intended service. Select slip joints to provide 200% absorption capacity of piping expansion between anchors.

    B. Slip joints shall be designed for repacking under pressure, with drip connections for steam piping systems, and ends to mate with piping system.

    06 FLEXIBLE BALL PIPE JOINTS

    A. Provide flexible ball pipe joints where indicated for piping systems, with materials and pressure/temperature ratings selected by Installer to suit intended service. Design joints for 360 degrees rotation, and with minimum of 30 degrees angular flexing movement for sizes 1/4" to 6", 15 degrees for sized 8" to 30". Provide 2 asbestos composition gaskets for each joint.

    B. Certify carbon steel joints for environmental shock testing in accordance with MIL-S-4456 or MIL-S-901C.

    C. Comply with Section II of ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code and ANSI B31.1 Power Piping for materials and design of pressure containing parts and bolting.

    D. Test each assembly with steam at working pressure of piping system for zero leaks before shipment.

    07 PIPE ALIGNMENT GUIDES

    A. Provide pipe alignment guides on both sides of expansion joints, and elsewhere as indicated. Construct with 4 finger spider traveling inside a guiding sleeve, with provision for anchoring to building substrate.

   PART 3 - EXECUTION

    08 INSTALLATION OF MANUFACTURED EXPANSION JOINTS

    A. Install expansion joints where indicated, and elsewhere as determined by Installer for adequate expansion of installed piping system. Install in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Provide pipe anchors and pipe alignment guides as indicated, and in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations. Align units properly to avoid end loading and torsional stress.

    09 EXPANSION COMPENSATION FOR RISERS AND TERMINALS

    A. Install connection between piping mains and risers with at least 5 pipe fittings including tee in main. Install connections between piping risers and terminal units with at least 4 pipe fittings including tee in riser.
