General Construction Specifications

   PART 1 - GENERAL

    01 SECTION INCLUDES

    A. Board-type thermal insulation of the following type:

    1. Extruded polystyrene board installed in exterior cavity walls.

    B. Insulation boards for roofing work is specified in roofing section/Division 7 and are not part of this section.

    02 REFERENCE STANDARDS

    A. ASTM C578 - Preformed, Cellular Polystyrene Thermal Insulation.

    03 SUBMITTALS

    A. Submit the following in accordance with Section 01340.

    B. Manufacturer's Product Data: Indicating full compliance with requirements of this section; installation instructions, for each type of insulation specified.

    04 DELIVERY, HANDLING, STORAGE

    A. Products shall be delivered to job-site in original unopened packages bearing manufacturer's labels and in accordance with Section 01610.

    B. Store and protect products in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations and Section 01620.

    1. Insulation shall be shielded from sunlight when stored outdoors for extended periods.

   PART 2 - PRODUCTS

    05 BOARD INSULATION

    A. Rigid Polystyrene Board:

    1. Type: Dow's "Styrofoam SM" extruded polystyrene insulation board, closed-cell, rigid, designed for exterior walls, square edges, ASTM C578 Type IV quality, complete with adhesive specifically formulated for use with this board and field conditions.

    2. Manufacturer: The Dow Chemical Company.

    3. For Cavity Walls: 1".

    2.02 SUBSTITUTIONS

    A. The following manufacturers are acceptable only after compliance with requirements of this section.

    1. UC Industries Inc. (Foamular), Parsippany, New Jersey.

   PART 3 - EXECUTION

    06 INSTALLATION OF WALL INSULATION

    A. Install insulation boards horizontally with staggered joints.

    1. Secure boards to substrate with approved adhesive in accordance with board manufacturer's published instructions.

    2. Boards shall be tightly fitted to each other.

    B. Neatly cut and shape insulation boards to fit around wall penetrations.

    1. Seal around cut-outs with approved adhesive.

    07 PROTECTION

    A. Protect the installed insulation from physical abuse and the weather.

    B. Insulation which is damaged or becomes wet before and after installation shall be replaced with new insulation.
